APRS® – the Automatic Packet Reporting System – is a data mode, designed by Robert Bruninga WB4APR. Its primary purpose is to provide local, real-time information of immediate value.
It is primarily used by ham radio operators to transmit their locations to other hams in the immediate area. It is also widely used to transmit data from weather stations.
